Undoubtedly, you have heard about the benefits of the acai berry. But what do you really know about this magical little berry? What is it that gives it so many health benefits? And is there scientific evidence to back up the claims.
The acai berry comes from the acai palm tree (Euterpe oleracea), which is native to Central and South America. The actual berry is about an inch-long and it is a reddish and purplish colored fruit. The acai berry is a relative to the blueberries, cranberries and other dark purple fruit. Like blueberries, cranberries, grapes and other dark red to purple fruits, the acai berry is loaded with antioxidants.
Research on these dark colored fruits, including the acai berry, has been focused up the antioxidant activity. Theoretically, this activity may help diseases that are caused by oxidative stress such as heart disease and cancer.
The acai berry contains several substances with antioxidant properties called anthocyanins and flavonoids. The word anthocyanin comes from the Greek words that mean “plant” and “blue”. The anthocyanins are responsible for the red, purple and blue hues in many fruits, vegetables and flowers.
Foods that are high in anthocyanins are very deeply colored and range from a deep purple to almost black. These would include foods such as blueberries, red grapes and red wine and of course, the acai berry.
Anthocyanins and flavonoids are powerful antioxidants that defend the bodies from stress. Our bodies create free radicals in response to many of the stresses we place upon ourselves. A free radical is basically any atom or molecule that has a single unpaired electron in an outer shell. You may recall learning in your high school science classes about atoms and molecules, protons and electrons.
Any further discussion of this is beyond the scope of this article however, in simple terms, just know that a free radicals are very unstable and may be the cause of many diseases, including heart disease, cancer and even such things as aging problems and wrinkles. An antioxidant basically comes in and pairs the random electron. The antioxidant attaches and completes the atom therefore reducing the risk of free radical damage and diseases.
Some studies have show that the pulp of the acai berry has an even higher antioxidant capacity than blueberries, cranberries, raspberries, blackberries and strawberries. Studies are continuing but more is being learned about this powerful fruit every day.
Scientists are continuously learning more and more about the functional power of superfoods, such as the acai berry. The acai berry has been touted in some weight loss products, however few studies have tested that benefit. It is known however, that healthy foods and high antioxidants are a crucial part of any healthy diet and especially those that promote weight loss.
Acai berry products can be a strong component of your healthy weight loss and your projected longevity.
