Learn About Antioxidants & Free Radicals

by Janice Ward on May 18, 2009

Many of us have the name “free radicals” but lots of people do not completely appreciate what they are. Free radicals are in fact physical byproducts of our bodily functions and our bodies require a specific amount of them. In disproportionate quantities they are destructive and can damage our cells and generate disease and age related declines.

Think about how an apple will become brown if you slice it and leave it exposed to air. That modification in color and texture is from oxidation. That is fundamentally the same course that our bodies go through and it is the identical process that causes free radicals in our bodies.

Our bodies convey oxygen through our bloodstream where it is vital for natural cell function. A problem occurs if the oxygen is deficient in the number of electrons it holds. In order to keep the electrons steady, the molecules will take electrons from other molecules which leaves a molecule with an unpaired electron which is really what a free radical is. It is a molecule with an unpaired electron.

There are many separate factors that can play a role to the construction of free radicals. The value of the oxygen could be impaired because of environmental pollutants, cigarette smoke and more. Different bodily functions and issues could also contribute to poor quality oxygen. Free radicals can be produced by the food that we consume, disproportionate exposure to the sun, exposure to radiation and environmental pollutants. When the body uses oxygen for common processes, unpaired electrons or free radicals are released in the process.

Free radicals are vastly unstable, unpaired oxygen molecules that can produce a great deal of trouble and strain for the body. Free radicals are a big contributing factor to premature aging, the clogging of arteries, the development of diseases and more.

An antioxidant will pair off up with an unpaired electron in the free radical and stabilize it. Antioxidants reduce the effect the free radicals. In the process, however, more and more free radicals are produced. So you must constantly continue to replace the antioxidants. In order to be successful antioxidants must be consumed on a reliable basis.

A diet high in antioxidants has been confirmed to be favorable to work against the effects of aging, to avert diseases, to support in weight loss, insomnia, infertility and even more. Antioxidants are copious in nature’s healthiest foods and you can get most of your vital wholesome antioxidants from eating a healthful diet.

Free radicals are a natural result of living and we cannot do without them, however in disproportionate quantities they can produce many troubles. You can regulate free radical damage by consuming plenty of natural occurring antioxidants and you can find these powerful nutrients in most of nature’s healthiest foods.
